Apprentice Shapeshifter of digital media

27.02.10 - PTS Site up and running.

Personal training site up and running for Personal Training Systems. All programming and design by Will.

09.02.10 - Looking deeper into the lesser known ways, and the skilled conventional ways, of using Photoshop.

Im always looking to improve what I know. Recently, I looked to some online learning resources and learnt some very nice techniques to do with Image retouching, and producing 3D based movies from 2D images. Click on the image on the right for more info.

09.02.10 - New Songs!

I had some pretty major problems with my hardware the past couple of months. To begin with, my UX1 performed excellently. However, for some strange reason, it began to malfunction in a way that rendered it useless around Christmas time. In an attempt to remedy the situation, I adjusted the volume levels, tried different effects models, updated the drivers, updated the software, used alternative third-party recording software, rebooted dozens of times, and still everything kept coming out sounding totally muffled. "This is useless" I thought to myself. "It is for music...how can it lack fidelity like this?!"

So I posted on the Line 6 forum and waited. Then something funny happened. I recieved advice on the best course of action to take, and then when I fired up my broken UX1 to take it, it was already working. Just like that. Very curious. While Im lamenting the fact I don't know why it wasn't working before, I am finding that I am very appreciative that it does work. And when this baby does work, oh man it works!

Which brings me to the purpose of this article - the things Ive written and recorded. Four songs in total. One was recorded while the UX1 was being a bit funny, so the sound quality, (and musicianship quality!) are both off. Two were made with the UX1 operating at "peak efficiency" (!) over the past couple of days, and sound much better, and the fourth is a completely different animal, as it was made with 8-bit tracking software. So enough blabbing - use the link on the right or at the top of this box and have a listen!

28.01.10 - Digital Paintings Underway (As Usual!)

Being on top of more 'real' work, I decided to produce the images on the right. An almost monochromatic approach allowed me to focus on lighting. Click on the images on the right for larger views.

This ones definately unconventional. Click on the speaker to listen.

05.10.09 - Will takes on Storyboarding work for "Love@1st Sight"

I have recently taken up storyboarding work for the short film "Love@1st Sight." The close up images here were requested as preliminary work to the storyboard, and are based heavily on photographs. Work on the actual storyboard was started today; its completion is expected around the 20th of October. Click here to visit the production website for a synopsis and details about the people involved!

05.08.09 Will gets back into painting

Sometime around 10:30pm last night I found myself twiddling my thumbs again. I was somewhat on top of everything. Job applications sent out, bike tyres fixed, freelance work requests volleyed back and completed, recording equipment tested and primed. I decided that it wasn't too late in the evening to start putting some paint on the canvas I had set up in the corner of my room. Even though I didn't feel particularly in the mood for it, I told myself that it would come once the picture had been started. I picked up a bunch of tiny doodles that I had done earlier this week, and began to leaf though. Since the paper was wafer thin, being of a .45 pence pad from a stationary shop, (I was caught stranded with nothing to scribble on) some of the drawings had bled through onto the sheets below. The simplistic features of a figure in 3/4 view, which had been just strong enough to make its way coherently onto the page below, became the map for the oils. I spent a few minutes transferring this onto the canvas with pencil, a few hours painting the first half, and then the rest was done after a good sleep and breakfast. While the art critic in me says that the physical result is pretty mediocre, the artisan perspective that resounds within me is a robust "hmm...good enough job." Whats important, however, is that the first oil painting Ive done in a while - the slow, clunky, awkward one - is out of the way, and the second one, which will most likely flow much more deftly into an aesthetic creation, can be started the very instant the opportunity arises. I will try to upload images of this first painting once the oils have dried.

02.08.09 - New additions to Will's hardware: UX1 and NC10: Tests and Results.

Deciding that I needed a better way of recording music, I ordered a Line6 UX1. It arrived a few days ago, and its already sounding very nice - and looking very sporty - sat squarely on top of my sub like a vintage radio head unit from a classic car. I recorded a quick (and very very rough) ditty to test out the effects and dynamics, in addition to my new work flow. This was especially exciting as I was also trying out some synth software on my brand new Samsung N110! If you would like to hear the rough and patchy psychedelic craziness that reeled off my mind, please click on the link to the right.
